Drones and the law

The laws for drone flying in the UK are explained in the Civil Aviation Authority Drone and Model Aircraft Code.

All drone operators in the UK must register with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and obtain both an Operator ID and a Flyer ID. The only exception is if your drone weighs less than 250g and is either a toy or has no camera. The DJI Mini 4 Pro is not a toy and has a camera. The Operator ID must be clearly labelled on every drone you own. You can use the same Operator ID for all your drones. The Flyer ID shows you've passed a basic flying test and know how to fly safely and legally. If the drone weighs less than 250g and is in the A1 category a Flyer ID is recommended but not required. I have a Flyer ID anyway.

Drone operations in the UK are classified into three main categories, based on the level of risk. The Open Category is for low-risk operations and is divided into:

The drone is A1 (under 250g)
Labelled with Operator and Flyer ID
Operator ID: GBR-OP-BG45Q8G7G2GH
Expiry date: 03/05/2026
Flyer ID: GBR-RP-9LJVWCFGKDVV
Expiry date: 03/05/2030
Covered by third-party insurance

The use of drones in the UK is set to expand greatly. New CAA rules will come into force in 2026. They will include, for example, a new rule limiting 'toy' drones to 100g maximum. Most of the changes will apply to commercial drone operators flying drones over 250g. I am not a commercial drone operator.

Neighbours

Occasionally my drone may be in the sky over the Foxholes area. It is however one of the smallest quietest types available. At 400 feet above the ground it is hardly visible or audible. Operates at 67 dB(A) during hover (equivalent to normal conversation). Main purpose in any case is not to fly over the Foxholes Area but further afield.

It has a video and still camera. Photos or recordings of private residential properties are covered by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act (2018). I am fully aware of the regulations and will comply at all times. I have no intention of infringing anyone's right to privacy by taking photographs or video and will not do so.

Any concerns at all about nuisance or privacy, please come and discuss. If anyone in the Foxholes area would like a private photographic roof inspection, I am more than happy to do it free of charge on a non-commercial basis.
